Being honored as a finalist validates our Board’s deep commitment to effective governance, operational excellence, and hard work, as well as its resilience and willingness to tackle the organization’s challenges. Lastly, it acknowledges the strength of the partnership between our board and staff.
What have you learned through the application process for the Board Leadership Award?
The application process has provided an opportunity for introspection that is not always afforded to organizations as they focus on their day-to-day work. Every day, we are proud to have made such significant contributions to this organization, but this process forced us to reflect on the meaningful changes in our governance structures, decision-making processes, and the evolution of our board’s role within the organization that all purposefully took place to enable this success. The process has highlighted the importance of adaptability, transparent communication, and the continuous pursuit of equity and inclusion, and it has reminded us of areas for ongoing improvement.
What advice would you offer for other organizations/board members striving for excellence in board leadership?
We believe that excellence in board leadership comes from intentionality, humility, and a steadfast focus on the organization’s mission. Boards must face the reality of their organization’s current state by fostering open dialogue and prioritizing building trust with staff and stakeholders to actionably plan for the future. We’ve seen enormous benefit from clearly delineating and articulating the roles and responsibilities between the board and staff, while investing in comprehensive onboarding for new members. Moreover, embedding equity and inclusion into every facet of governance ensures that diverse perspectives inform decision-making, leading to more holistic and impactful outcomes.
