Meet Post Award Finalist Children’s Inn at NIH

Children’s Inn at NIH is a nonprofit, family-centered residence for pediatric patients and their families at the National Institutes of Health. It serves to keep children together with their families during serious illness while reducing their stress and facilitating healing through mutual support. Since 1990, The Inn has hosted more than 10,000 families from 50 states and 80 countries. The Inn employees 20 full-time and 12 part-time employees with support from 200 volunteers. The Inn’s annual budget is approximately $4 million.

  1. What does this award mean for you and your organization?

    The award is a tremendous honor and validates the principles and practices that we value dearly: adherence to our mission, excellent financial stewardship, and accountability to stakeholders.

  2. What have you learned through the application process for The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management?

    The application process was beneficial in gaining a broad perspective of our organizational strategies and management practices. It provided an opportunity to examine our overarching goals and the success rate in achieving them. While the small staff at The Inn already is collaborative, the application process allowed us to learn about each department’s accomplishments and successes in greater detail. This process helped us to identify what we do well and where we can improve our management practices – particularly, better strategic use of the data we collect from families.

  3. What advice would you offer for other nonprofit leaders/organizations striving for excellence in nonprofit management?

    Stay focused on your organization’s mission. Your mission should drive the planning process. Consistently monitor performance and assess the needs of your constituents. If you are grounded in the mission and the needs of your constituents, you can accomplish your goals.
