The Board Leadership Award Online Nomination

Elligibility requirements

Boards of Directors of nonprofit organizations based in the Washington metropolitan area are eligible. The organization must be based in the geographic area defined as the District of Columbia, Suburban Maryland (Montgomery and Prince George’s counties) or Virginia.

Two-thirds of the Board members must have served on the Board a minimum of one year as of the due date of the nomination. All examples and explanations used in the nomination must have occurred during the Executive Director's or Board members’ tenure, and must not exceed five years. Internal nominations must be made in cooperation with the current Executive Director. External nominations must be made in cooperation with the Board Chair and the Executive Director.

Any Board meeting these requirements may be nominated. The fee to participate is free for Center Members; $150.00 for all other organizations. Once the nomination is submitted an invoice will be sent to you.

Part One

The Award nomination is designed to give considerable flexibility for all organizations to detail the work of their Boards. Please submit only one copy of the nomination form. Other than the requested supporting documents, do not send books, videotapes, manuscripts or other unrequested materials. These will not be reviewed or returned. 

Complete the Part One Nomination Form, and email to with supporting documents by the extended deadline - April 13, 2018

Part Two

After an initial screening, the Board Leadership Award Selection Committee will narrow the list of nominations based on responses to the Part One application. Up to four semifinalists for the under $2 million category and up to four semifinalists for the over $2 million category will be notified no later than May 4, 2018. Those semi-finalists will be invited to participate in interviews at the Center with the Selection Committee. Interviews will take place on May 22, 2018.

Part Three

After interviews have concluded the selection committee will select up to three organizations from each category who will be asked to participate in the site visit phase. Site visits will be conducted between June 6 - June 21, 2018. The committee will select the 2018 winners and honorable mentions for each category after the completion of all site visits. The winners will be announced at a presentation in July.
