Survey Results: Economy's Impact on Nonprofits in Greater Washington Region

The Center for Nonprofit Advancement surveyed its member nonprofits throughout greater Washington to assess the impact of current economic conditions on the region’s nonprofit sector. A group representative of the region’s nonprofits, including the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, responded.

Among the findings:

  • 72% receive funding from foundations.

  • Nearly a third (31%) maintain diverse funding streams including support from foundations, corporations, government and individuals.

  • A quarter (26%) have already heard from current funding sources that they will give less in the future. Nearly half (43%) are anticipating decreased giving in 2009.

  • A third (33%) have no operating reserves or endowment.

  • Nearly half (44%) anticipate their organization will experience an increase in demand for services in 2009 and some have already experienced increases as a result of the economic downturn.

  • 41% of organizations anticipate suspending or closing down programs and/or reducing staff size in 2009.

“The current economic crisis is extraordinary in its magnitude and threat to the services that nonprofits provide for our communities,” said Center CEO Glen O’Gilvie. “The Center for Nonprofit Advancement understands that this crisis will require creative and strategic thinking among nonprofits and funders alike.”
