On Thursday, October 29, nearly 300 from the region’s nonprofit, foundation, legislative and business communities came together to celebrate the accomplishments of the Greater Washington region’s nonprofit sector and the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s 30 years of service to nonprofits.

In her keynote address on the charity of giving, Debbi Jarvis, Pepco Holdings, Inc. Vice President of Communications, acknowledged that "it has been a tough year and the need is greater than ever before. Nonprofits continue to survive. Clearly, when the Center is successful in strengthening nonprofits, nonprofits are successful in strengthening the community."

The Center’s 2009 Annual Meeting and 30th Anniversary Celebration included presentation of the Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman 2009 EXCEL Award, the Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award and the Center for Nonprofit Advancement Award.

Recipients of the 2009 Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award included:

  • Neil O. Albert, City Administrator, District of Columbia

  • The Honorable Joanne Claybon Benson, 24th District of Prince George’s County, Maryland General Assembly

  • The Honorable Karen S. Montgomery, 14th District of Montgomery County, Maryland General Assembly

  • The Honorable Congressman Jim Moran, 8th District of Virginia, U.S. House of Representatives

Each public official was recognized for their dedication to the region's nonprofit community.

The Center also recognized long-time member, the Public Access Corporation of the District of Columbia (DCTV), with the 2009 Center for Nonprofit Advancement Award for their vision and dedication in finding new ways to support the Greater Washington nonprofit sector.

“The Center has long recognized excellence in nonprofit management and chief executive leadership,” said Center CEO Glen O’Gilvie. “In this our 30th year, we are pleased to celebrate our newest EXCEL, Public Policy Leadership and Center Award winners in hopes that they will inspire other nonprofit leaders and policymakers going forward.”

Also announced was the launch of the Center’s new TV program, Connections, in partnership with the Public Access Corporation of the District of Columbia (DCTV). Beginning November 3, the weekly, 30-minute program will share issues, experts and strategies to empower your community. The program will air on the new nonprofit channel, DCTV FOCUS, on Comcast 96 and RCN 11. DCTV FOCUS nonprofit programming will air Tuesdays through Thursdays, 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
