Horton’s Kids Wins The Washington Post 2011 Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management
Social Service Organization Recognized for Innovative Strategic Planning, Superior Volunteer Management
WASHINGTON- May 25, 2011- The Washington Post and the Center for Nonprofit Advancement today announce Horton’s Kids is the 2011 recipient of The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management. In its 17th year of competition, The Post Award recognizes outstanding achievement in nonprofit management for a Washington-area nonprofit organization.
Horton’s Kids is a nonprofit social service organization providing comprehensive services to the children of Washington, D.C.’s Anacostia neighborhood that improve the quality of their daily lives and nurture their desire and ability to succeed.
The Center’s award selection committee noted several outstanding management practices for Horton’s Kids, including:
- Effective use and implementation of an organizational strategic plan by board and staff
- Strong volunteer management practices including systems to train, evaluate and recognize participants
- Leveraging of technology to integrate data from program participants, volunteers and donors
- Innovative mechanisms to document actions and feedback for use in planning for the future
“The Washington Post has long been a supporter of the local nonprofit community and this award is an important recognition of strong nonprofit leadership. The awards program is intended to help foster communication among organizations and encourage the sharing of ideas and best practices,” said Steve Hills, President and General Manager of The Washington Post.
“Horton's Kids has developed and successfully integrated highly effective management practices into their day-to-day operations. Their willingness to continuously develop, evaluate and perfect planning, volunteer management and other practices has led to the same success all nonprofits and communities should enjoy,” said Center CEO Glen O’Gilvie. “We are committed through our training and capacity building programs to ensuring that all nonprofits receive and replicate the best practices of our winner and finalists to benefit people and communities in need.”
As the winner, Horton’s Kids will receive a $10,000 grant and a scholarship for one person to attend the Georgetown University Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership’s Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate Program.
The remaining three finalists received honorable mention awards. The organizations include: Latin American Youth Center, Prince George’s Child Resource Center and the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. Each will be presented with a $2,500 grant award. The award winner and honorable mention recipients also receive access to the Core Capacity Assessment Tool compliments of TCC Group.
The Washington Post Award Selection Committee judges applicant organizations in the areas of fiscal management, information and communication, organizational development, people development, planning, resource development, risk management, and use of technology.
This award is a program of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement, sponsored by The Washington Post, cosponsored by RAFFA, P.C., with additional support by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement's Benefits Trust and Georgetown University’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership’s Nonprofit Executive Certificate Program.
Recent winners of The Washington Post Award include: PHILLIPS Programs for Children and Families (2010), Doorways for Women and Families (2009), Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (2008), Tahirih Justice Center (2007), N Street Village (2006), Higher Achievement Program (2005) and Bread for the City (2004).
