Q & A with National Breast Cancer Coalition
Describe your organization?
The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is dedicated to ending breast cancer by January 1, 2020 through the power of grassroots action and advocacy. NBCC increases funding for breast cancer research; monitors how those funds are spent; expands access to quality health care for all; and ensures that trained advocates influence all decision making that impacts breast cancer.
Who do you serve?
Survivors, healthcare providers, policymakers, educators, advocates, families and friends of those affected by breast cancer.
What contribution have you made this year to the community?
One year ago NBCC launched Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®, a mission to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020. Over the last year, NBCC has reached many of the milestones set for the first year of the campaign; including issuing the first Progress Report, Ending Breast Cancer: A Baseline Status Report; hosting the first annual meeting of the Artemis Project®, a collaborative effort of teams working on a preventive breast cancer vaccine; convening two leadership Summits, one to begin the strategic plan on preventing metastasis and one on primary prevention; and designed and introduced federal legislation, the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act of 2011.
How have you seen the community benefit from your services? Have there been any changes in the community due to your work?
NBCC is quite different from other breast cancer organizations. We are about challenging the status quo, catalyzing research and science, leveraging existing resources and giving those diagnosed and those at risk of breast cancer the tools to make decisions for themselves. Our achievements range from generating $2.68 billion of federal funding for breast cancer research to creating a system of access to health care for uninsured women with breast and cervical cancer to launching international training programs in science and health care.
How has the Center been able to help you?
The Center’s Health Care program allows for NBCC to provide comprehensive and affordable dental and vision insurance for its employees. NBCC staff also appreciates the access to supplemental life insurance coverage.
Have you taken any courses at the Center? Would you recommend any to other members and non-members?
The courses offered by the Center allow NBCC employees to continually expand and develop their professional skills. NBCC has benefitted from programs that sharpen skills in fundraising, communications, and human resource management.
