The Washington Post 2010 Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management

Celebrating Outstanding Achievements in Nonprofit Management

Nearly 300 from the region’s nonprofit, corporate and philanthropic community came together on June 24 to hear best practices in nonprofit management and celebrate the finalists for The Washington Post 2010 Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management.

This 16th year of competition hosted by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement recognized outstanding achievements in nonprofit management from five award finalists—locally, nationally and internationally serving nonprofits in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland.

In saluting the 2010 finalists, Michael Caggiano of Post Award Co-Sponsor RAFFA, P.C., said, “You light the way for all other nonprofit's success. For that we applaud you.”

Following a Best Practices Workshop, PHILLIPS Programs for Children and Families of Annandale, Va., was presented The Washington Post 2010 Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management. PHILLIPS serves the needs of individuals with emotional and behavioral problems and their families throughout Greater Washington.

Honorable Mention awards were presented to Asian American LEAD of Washington, D.C.; Byte Back of Washington, D.C.; The Children’s Inn at NIH of Bethesda, Md.; and Global Impact of Alexandria, Va.

During the awards ceremony, Washington Post Metro Columnist Robert McCartney noted, "This award is an effective way to stay in touch, help you network, promote well being and advance the Greater Washington area."

As the winner, PHILLIPS receives a $10,000 cash grant and a scholarship to Georgetown University’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership’s Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate Program. Each honorable mention recipient received a $2,500 award.

“We are honored to share examples of excellence from PHILLIPS and our 2010 honorable mention recipients with leaders from the nonprofit, philanthropic, corporate and government communities throughout Greater Washington,” said the Center CEO Glen O’Gilvie.

The Washington Post Award Selection Committee judges applicant organizations in the areas of fiscal management, information and communication, organizational development, people development, planning, resource development, risk management, and use of technology. This is the 16th year of competition.
